Seven years after I painted this rendition of Salus Populi Romani, on March 27, 2020, the icon was venerated by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. Pious tradition claims that this particular image was painted by Saint Luke! The original icon was brought from the Basilica of St. Mary Major (The Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore) where it normally resides. Salus Populi Romani means Protectress and Health of the Roman People.
